HC 52

  • Bandages, 1870-present
  • Approximately 100 items.
  • Includes hospital dressings, Band-AidTM adhesive bandages, and military combat dressings. Highlights of the collection include the Esmarch bandage adopted by the U.S. Army in 1870, a triangular bandage based on the same design developed for the Boy Scouts in 1958, and an Iraqi bandage used during the Persian Gulf War that was nearly identical to the Esmarch.

  • Hospital Equipment and Supplies, 1930-present
  • Approximately 130 items.
  • Consists of the general hospital supplies, operating room supplies, and hospital linens. Included in the collection are sterilizers, instrument cleaners, and medical furniture.

HC 54

  • Lenses, 1880-present
  • Approximately 260 items.
  • Includes a range of eyeglasses and contact lenses. Highlights include eyeglasses issued by the U.S. Army for use in gas masks as well as equipment used in optometry shops and jewelry stores to grind lenses and make eyeglasses. Some objects belonged to optometrist Robert Martin.

HC 55

  • Sensory Aids, 1880-present
  • Approximately 120 items.
  • Consists primarily of hearing aids ranging from ear trumpets, to large microphones that hung around the user's neck, to the modern designs that clip onto the ear.
