Students at St Anne Institute created various VRML exhibits using Strata3D software. As in previous years the students were given a selection of objects from the museums collections and were asked to "curate" and design an exhibit. After creating their 3D environments, students wrote and gave a presentation about the selection process and objects in their exhibit. The talks were given using PowerPoint presentations to the school: (Click to download the PowerPoint Presentation)

3D Modeling Workshop for Students

March 27-31, 2000

The Human Developmental Anatomy Center and SGI, Inc. sponsored a five-day, 3D modeling workshop with the St. Anne Institute for Girls in Albany, New York.

The purpose of the workshop was to introduce the students to concepts of 3D visualization. Using seven O2 computers on loan from SGI and SGI's Cosmo Worlds modeling software, the students were assigned the task of creating a virtual museum exhibit.

HDAC staff compiled a list of several objects from the National Museum of Health and Medicine and students were asked to choose at least 5-6 of these objects to include in their exhibit. Additionally, students were required to include the label text for each object. The objects ranged in subject matter; biology, anatomy, embryology, history of medical technology, and civil war medicine.

Many of the students had no prior experience working with computers, so the program was a valuable and fun introduction to the world of computers and computer modeling. Upon completion of the workshop each student received a certificate of accomplishment!

  • What it means to develop a museum exhibit
  • Manipulation and layout of 3D virtual space
  • Use and manipulation of primitive objects
  • Displaying text and textures
  • Importing objects
  • Creating viewpoints
  • Preparing oral presentations
