Bell H-13 helicopter landing. Photograph courtesy Dr. Richard Mulvaney (Captain, U.S. Army (Ret.)). Rapid medical evacuation increased survival rates. Rugged terrain and poor road conditions complicated the movement of the sick and wounded. Although helicopters transported only four percent of all patients, they saved many lives by bringing patients to a hospital within an hour of wounding. Most patients were evacuated by hospital train to rear echelon hospital in Korea. Aircraft were used to fly patients from Korea to hospitals in Japan and ultimately the United States. |
