Visibly Human Health and Disease in the Human Body

Visibly Human Poster

The body can be described as a machine. It has a pump and many moving parts. It can be broken and sometimes repaired. Often it fixes itself. But this is only a part of the picture. Our bodies are not machines. We may be able to replace some individual parts but we cannot trade our bodies in for new ones. The body is a complex system of balances and imbalances, of form, and thought and action. Our bodies serve as home and protector—and each one is unique.

This exhibit describes the body’s major organ systems and depicts how your body functions when you are healthy, and how it changes when you are sick or injured. The parts of the body you will see in this exhibit are real. You may appreciate them for their complexity or admire them for their simplicity but please respect them.
