"THE WAY WE WORK" OPENS AT NMHM! This special visiting exhibition features 55 prints from David Macaulay's most recent book "The Way We Work: Getting to Know the Amazing Human Body." See the inner workings of the human body from Macaulay's unique perspective. Organized by the National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature (NCCIL) of Abilene, the exhibit closes on September 20, 2009. Admission is free. Copies of the Macaulay book are available for purchase in the gift shop. Our new Family Discovery Room features a short film about the creation of the book, as well as a discovery box of hands-on activities for children and their caregivers. Calendar of Upcoming Programs:
FREE PUBLIC TOUR:Free docent-led tours are offered on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month, followed by an interesting hands-on discovery cart demonstration. No reservations are required. Details about the discovery carts are below.
Family Discovery Cart: "The Way We Work"
When: Saturdays, May 9 & 23, 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
What:: Learn how the body works through a selection of hands-on activities such as touching plastinated body organs and bones, wearing an anatomy apron, playing games, and exploring anatomy dolls.
Cost: Free
KNIT HELMET LINERS FOR SERVICE MEMBERS
When:, May 16, 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.
What:: Join NMHM staff as we partner with local knitting circles to prepare helmet liners for service members serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. The liners help to protect service members and keep them warm during the harsh winters in these countries. If you are an experienced knitter and wish to get an early start on the project, you may download the knitting pattern at http://www.usmcmuseum.com/knitpattern.pdf. What:Tour the grounds of Walter Reed Army Medical Center and then visit the National Museum of Health and Medicine

David Macaulay, Author Talk and Book Signing!
When:Friday, June 12 (1:00-2:30 p.m.) and Saturday, June 13 (10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. & 1:00-2:30 p.m.)
What:Join David Macaulay for a discussion about his new book, The Way We Work, as he illuminates the most important machine of all — the human body. Your body is made up of various complex systems, and Macaulay is a master at making the complex understandable. He shows how the parts of the body work together, from the mechanics of a hand, to the process by which the heart pumps blood, to the chemical exchanges necessary to sustain life. A book signing will follow the discussion. (Books will available for sale in the Museum Gift Shop.)

Family Discovery Cart: "The Way We Work"
When: Every Wednesday, starting June 3 through August 26: 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
What: Learn how the body works through a selection of hands-on activities such as touching plastinated body organs and bones, wearing an anatomy apron, playing games, and exploring anatomy dolls.
Cost: Free
An Introduction to Techniques in Medical Illustration
When: Saturday, July 11, 2009, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
What: This workshop will explore the delicate beauty of traditional carbon dust illustration. While working from real specimens, participants will learn about the careful observation and drawing techniques required to create beautiful and accurate drawings using carbon dust, colored pencil, and ink. Ages 13 to adult. All levels welcome.
Course leader: Elizabeth Lockett, Collections Manager of the Museum’s Human Developmental Anatomy Center and Scientific Illustrator.
Cost: Free. Pre-registration is required by July 1, 2009: (202) 782-2673. Class limited to 15 students.
Teddy Bear Check-up
When: Saturday, September 12, 2009, 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
What: Bring your favorite stuffed friend and explore the Teddy Clinic with activities designed to highlight the body, nutrition, physical fitness, and healthy habits. Recommended for grades PreK-2.
Cost: Free. Call 202-782-2673 to make reservations.

DOCENT TRAINING SCHEDULED FOR JULY 2009: Become a Museum Docent!Consider becoming a docent at the National Museum of Health and Medicine! Volunteer docents provide guided tours to groups of adults and school-aged children on weekdays and weekends. Training is required--docent training is scheduled for July 18, 2009. Docents must complete registration with the American Red Cross volunteer program on Walter Reed Army Medical Center. For more information, email nmhminfo@afip.osd.mil or call (202) 782-2456.
