He obtained a degree in medicine from the University of Budapest in 1913 and served as an otolaryngologist in clinics in Budapest and Germany. Kelemen was conversant in five languages and very active academically. During his time in Europe, he published almost 100 papers, many dealing with histopathology of the temporal bone and larynx. <P>Due to the spread of Nazism in Europe, Kelemen moved to Boston in 1940 and became an associate professor at Tufts University. From there he joined the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, where he remained until retirement at age 65 (in 1955). While at the Infirmary, he published 75 articles on temporal bone and larynx histopathology, persistent stapedial arteries, temporal bone fractures, radiating damage to the inner ear, and labyrinthine otosclerosis. <P>In 1955, Dr. Howard House, president of the Ear Research Institute in Los Angeles (now the House Ear Institute), asked Kelemen to join the Institute and lead its Eccles Temporal Bone Laboratory. Kelemen served as director of the Laboratory until 1970, then co director until 1983. During this time, he also helped to establish the George Kelemen Library at the Ear Research Institute, which was named after him to honor his achievements in otolaryngology. While at the Ear Research Institute, Kelemen published 25 additional papers on otolaryngology. Dr. Kelemen died of kidney failure in Los Angeles in 1983, at age 93. <P>Adapted from: Linthicum, Fred H. The reprints were the collection of Dr. George Kelemen, and were collected by him via mail from otolaryngology specialists around the world. The reprints are in Hungarian, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Swedish. Some are signed by the author.
