96th Field Artillery Battalion winding its way though the mountains. Korea, January 26, 1951. U.S. Army photograph. Temperatures during the winter of 1950-1951 ranged from 20 to -30 degrees Fahrenheit. Over 5,600 frostbite patients were evacuated for treatment. The following winter, the U.S. Army's Cold Injury Team studied how frostbite could be prevented. The team discovered that wet clothing dissipated body heat and soldiers who had been immobilized or fatigued were especially vulnerable. The team concluded that improved training and management of service members while in a cold environment could easily prevent many cases of frostbite. |
