Welcome to this month's edition of our e-newsletter. Enjoy this brief update on upcoming exhibitions and public programs and the occasional interesting bit of news from our collections.

THIS MONTH:



LIMITED SPACE REMAINING! SCHEDULE YOUR SCHOOL TODAY for Brain Awareness Week 2011! Sign up for one incredible day introducing the brain and brain sciences to students. Space is limited, so act now! Each two-hour session features an introductory talk that will highlight the brain and its functions. Students will then rotate through a series of hands-on activity stations for one-on-one interactions with neuroscientists.

This program is designed for middle school students, grades 5 through 8, and is for groups (minimum: 10 students; maximum: 72 students). A limited number of individual students and home school students may attend, depending on space constraints. Reservations are made on a first-come, first-served basis. Morning and afternoon sessions are available.

Last chance to see "Wounded in Action: An Art Exhibition of Orthopaedic Advancements"! The exhibit, a collection of art works inspired by experiences with the wounds of war, has extended its stay at the Museum through the end of the month (February 27, 2011). The exhibit is produced and organized by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). For more information, read our latest news release.

  

  

  


Visit the Museum’s Web site to view seven new photo galleries! The galleries feature photographs from the Museum’s "Wounded in Action" Lunchtime Art Workshops; its 2010 Teddy Bear Clinic; its Paws for Purple Hearts program; its Lunchtime SciFest Talk Series; its exhibit at the 2010 USA Science and Engineering Festival; its Halloween family program; and its Winter Break 2010 Art Workshops. Who knows… maybe you’ll even see yourself!

FREE PUBLIC TOUR: : Free docent-led tours will be offered Saturday, February 12, 2011; Saturday, February 26, 2011; Saturday, March 12, 2011; and Saturday, March 26, 2011. Tours begin at 1:00 p.m. Reservations are not required.



Exploring the Heart: A Valentine’s Day Program

When: Saturday, February 12, 2011, 10:00am – 12:00pm

  

  

Join us for a unique Valentine’s Day program. Using specimens on display and models from the Museum’s collections, take a look at how a heart begins and grows. Observe as Museum staff dissect hearts from a reptile, mammal, and bird to demonstrate similarities and differences between bird and mammal anatomy. Try your hand at making a medical illustration from the dissections or create an anatomically-correct Valentine’s Day card. Supplies will be provided. Open to all ages.

Cost: Free
