PLEASE NOTE: THE MUSEUM WILL BE CLOSED ON TUESDAY, JANUARY 20, 2009 (INAUGURATION DAY). WE WILL BE OPEN NORMAL HOURS ON MONDAY, JANUARY 19 (MARTIN LUTHER KING JR HOLIDAY) AND RESUME NORMAL HOURS ON WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 21.

LINCOLN EXHIBIT OPENS FEBRUARY 12: Plan now to celebrate the Lincoln Bicentennial at the National Museum of Health and Medicine! On Feb. 12, NMHM will open a revamped exhibition of its Lincoln artifacts related to the assassination of the president. This new exhibition will feature a portion of a flag that decorated the state box at Ford's Theatre on the night Lincoln was shot, on loan from Ford's Theatre National Historic Site, NPS. ALSO: Reserve your seat today for our Symposium on Lincoln's Health, set for April 18-19, 2009. Interest is running very high for this unique, one-of-a-kind program, recently endorsed by the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission. In just two months (March 16-20, 2009), the 10th Annual Brain Awareness Week will be upon us! If you are a middle-school teacher in the greater Washington, D.C. area, don't miss your chance to get in on the action. Calendar of Upcoming Programs:

What: Special January 17 & 18 Docent-Led Tours and Discovery Cart
Details: Anticipating larger-than-usual visitorship over the weekend prior to the Inaugural on Jan. 20, the Museum has added a docent-led public tour and discovery cart program on each of those days. The tour will begin at 1pm and the discovery cart (see description below) will follow immediately after the tour.
Cost: FREE!



What: Forensic Family Discovery Cart: The Tales Bones Tell
When: Saturday, January 24, 2009, 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.
Details: Is it human or non-human? Male or female? Tall or short? Young or old? Join a museum docent for a hands-on exploration of how anthropologists analyze bones to assist with the identification of human remains.
Cost: Free!



What: "Health, Illness and the Presidency" Talk
When: Wednesday, February 4, 2009, 12:00 p.m.
Where: Russell Auditorium, National Museum of Health and Medicine (AFIP, Bldg. 54)
Details: Join NMHM as we celebrate the centennial year at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Lawrence C. Mohr, Jr., MD will discuss his experiences as White House Physician to three presidents – Reagan, Bush and Clinton – and his career at Walter Reed.
Cost: Free!



What: Sex, Sin, and Science: A History of Syphilis in America
When: Saturday, February 14, 2009, 11:00 a.m.
Where: Russell Auditorium, National Museum of Health and Medicine (AFIP, Bldg. 54)
Details: Did syphilis travel from the New World to Europe on Columbus’ ships? What remedies did Lewis and Clark use to treat the disease on their expedition? Why were so many women with venereal disease quarantined in America during both world wars? What impact did the introduction of penicillin have on the spread of venereal disease? Join us for this Valentine’s Day talk with noted medical historian John Parascandola as he discusses his book, "Sex, Sin, and Science: A History of Syphilis in America." A book signing will follow the presentation.

What: Forensic Family Discovery Cart: Dental Puzzles Solved
When: Saturday, February 14 and 28, 2009, 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.
Details: Join a museum docent for activities related to the use of dentistry in the identification of human remains.
Cost: Free!

UPDATED AUDIO TOUR AVAILABLE: Our audio tour continues to get rave reviews - try it out on your next visit! The tour includes new segments featuring our RESOLVED and Balad exhibits. SEEKING MUSEUM GREETERS!

NMHM seeks volunteer museum greeters/exhibit interpreters! Welcome visitors, interpret exhibits and become part of the Museum family. New volunteers must participate in a docent training program and a monthly continuing education meeting (4th Wednesday of each month from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm, except June & July). Greeters are asked to sign up for two shifts each month (shifts are everyday from 10:30-1:30 PM or 1:30-4:30 PM). Museum hours are 10:00-5:30 pm. A medical background is helpful but not required. Docents must complete registration with the American Red Cross volunteer program on Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Dress Code: Business Casual (docent jackets will be provided).
