THIS MONTH:



NMHM holds groundbreaking ceremony for new museum: A groundbreaking ceremony for NMHM was held May 21, on the site of its new building at Fort Detrick-Forest Glen in Silver Spring, Maryland. Construction is set to begin within weeks with completion due in summer 2011. The brief ceremony was led by speakers Dr. Florabel Mullick, Director, Armed Forces Institute of Pathology; the Museum’s director
Dr. Adrianne Noe; and Colonel Judith Robinson, Commander, US Army Garrison, Fort Detrick of Frederick, Maryland. The event was held on the 148th anniversary of the founding of the Museum. For more information, read our

NMHM docent appreciation field trip: NMHM Tour Program Manager Gwen Nelmes and NMHM Public Program Manager Andrea Schierkolk recently accompanied the museum’s volunteer docents on a tour of the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum to thank them for their commitment to NMHM’s tour programs. Docent Andi Sacks received the first annual Peter Cluckey Award for serving the most volunteer hours (142.5 hours) in 2009-2010. Regina Hunt, who received a pin on the trip for her 20 years of service with the American Red Cross, came in second with 94.5 hours served.

  

"Wounded in Action: An Art Exhibition of Orthopaedic Advancements," an exhibit of art works inspired by experiences with the wounds of war, is now on display at the National Museum of Health and Medicine in Washington, D.C. and the University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB). The exhibit is produced and organized by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). For more information, read our news release.

  

  

  

New Panel Exhibition on display at NMHM: The stories of West Nile virus and Lyme disease and how they affect human health are the focus of a new traveling exhibition "Solving the Puzzle: Lyme Disease, West Nile Virus & You," which is now on display at the National Museum of Health and Medicine. NMHM is the first museum to display this traveling exhibit. The Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History produced and organized the exhibition. For more information, read our news release.

FREE PUBLIC TOUR: Free docent-led tours are offered on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month. Tour begins at 1:00 p.m. Reservations are not required.



Brown Bag Lunch: "Yellow Fever — The Scourge Revealed"
A Presentation by CAPT Stanton E. Cope, Ph.D.
Medical Service Corps, U.S. Navy
Director, Armed Forces Pest Management Board

When:Tuesday, July 13, 2010, 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Celebrate Pest Week at the Museum with an intriguing talk about Yellow Fever and some of the events that led to greater control of this terrible scourge. The talk will focus on: a brief history of the disease and its impact on U.S. society and the world; the experiments done in Cuba by the Walter Reed Commission, using human volunteers; and global impact of the findings, aftermath of the experiments and fate of the members of the Reed Commission and some of the volunteers.

Additionally, papers, books and other items, some of which are from the 18th century, will be on display. These items, including a reprint signed and corrected by Major Walter Reed, are from CAPT Cope’s award-winning collection on Yellow Fever.

Special SciFest Program: "Manya: A Living History of Marie Curie"

When:Thursday, October 21, 2010, 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.

In This one-woman drama by storyteller Susan Marie Frontczak exposes the struggles and triumphs of Marie Curie, an academically impassioned, vehemently private, fervently Polish scientist, mother, and teacher and discoverer of radium and radioactivity. From the political oppression of her childhood, to scientific emergence and fame to the tragedy that forced her into single motherhood as well as further world prominence, Curie’s is a life that challenges our assumptions about what one person can achieve and the responsibilities of science.

USA Science and Engineering Festival

When: October 23-24, 2010

NMHM is proud to be an Official Partner of the inaugural USA Science & Engineering Festival to be held in the greater Washington DC area in October 2010. The Festival, which will be the country's first national science festival, is a collaboration of over 500 of the country's leading science and engineering organizations and aims to reignite the interest of our nation's youth in the sciences. The culmination of the Festival will be a two-day Expo on the National Mall on October 23-24, 2010, which will give children, teens and adults the opportunity to explore all facets of science & engineering through hundreds of fun, hands-on activities.
